FLAVOURS BEGIN BENEATH THE EARTH
Our Story
At Trufflewood, it all began with a simple desire—to step away from the desk and become part of something more meaningful.
We didn’t start with experience or knowledge of truffles. In fact, we knew very little. What followed was a steep learning curve, filled with curiosity, challenges, and a growing fascination for something truly unique. Truffles are mysterious, rare, and incredibly exciting—and we were completely drawn in. Nestled in Paengaroa, our land is something truly special. Alongside our truffière, we are fortunate to care for a beautiful native forest and a peaceful river, protected under the Queen’s Covenant. Being here isn’t just about growing truffles—it’s about being caretakers of this environment and respecting the land that gives so much back.
Today, what we love most is sharing the magic of truffles with others. Whether it’s through a hunt, a tasting, or a product, we enjoy opening up this hidden world to people who are just as curious and passionate as we are.
THE TRUFFLE HUNTER
Indie
Indie came into our lives at just 8 weeks old, and from the very beginning, she had a job to do. But she quickly became much more than that. She’s at the heart of everything we do—a beloved companion whose nose we quite literally rely on. Our success depends on her, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
THE OWNERS
Lance and Nikki
We were both born in Zimbabwe, a place that will always be part of who we are. But as the troubles began, we had to leave, and life took us on a bit of a journey.
Over the years, we lived in England, Kenya, Zambia, returned briefly to Zimbabwe. Each place had something that we loved but for different reasons being able to stay in those countries never worked out, and there was always a sense that we were still searching—for somewhere to truly belong.
Eventually, we followed family to New Zealand. By then, we had lost so much along the way, and arriving here felt different. It wasn’t just another move—it felt like coming home, or perhaps finally finding it.
Now, here at Trufflewood we feel like we have found our little slice of the world. What we’re trying to build with Trufflewood is more than just a business—it’s part of putting down roots, creating something meaningful, and being connected to the land in a way we hadn’t experienced before. It has had its ups and downs as things do but we continue to try and make it work.
The Family
Trufflewood is not just Lance and Nikki—it’s our family: lance, Nikki Hayley, Matthew, Indie, and Simba… who, for the record, does not hunt for truffles.
